چکیده

Grades of recovery and outcome of patients with "stroke" have been widely reported by different authors.' There is reasonable agreement on the "poor" outcome of a certain number of surviving "stroke" patients; their number is widely estimated to vary from 19% to 35%. With the growing need for physical medicine and rehabilitation treatment and the associated mushrooming financial expenditures for facilities, questions about the proper selection of patients for therapy, the economy of the methods used, and the practicality of the results of therapy are coming to the foreground more and more. It is for those patients who after the initial acute cerebral insult appear to remain in a sort of limbo, not deteriorating but not progressing in any direction in their functional recovery, that questions like "How long do we treat this type of patient?," and "When do we stop treatment?," usually arise and beg for an answer. We do not have sound clinical criteria or objective laboratory tools to scientifically answer these questions. It is evident from the results reported in this study that, despite the initial lack of progress and what, for all practical reasons, was the initial "failure" during the first few months following a stroke, a good number of "poor" patients could still be helped. The results also show that a certain number of patients require longer periods of therapy in order to reach their maximum potential. What is more relevant, however, is the observation that for certain patients it takes a longer time before they start to show any evidence of favorable change.

Candesartan Attenuates Ischemic Brain Edema and Protects the Blood–Brain Barrier Integrity from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) has an important role on cerebral microcirculation however, its direct roles in terms of ischemic brain edema need to be clarified. This study evaluated the role of central Ang II by using candesartan, as an AT1 receptor blocker, in the brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in rat. Methods...

بررسی اثرات محافظت نورونی فولرنول در مقابل آسیب های خونرسانی مجدد بعد از ایسکمی موضعی گذرای مغز در موش صحرایی

Background and purpose: Overproduction of free radicals after brain ischemia exacerbates brain infarction and edema specifically during early reperfusion. The scavenging property of water-soluble fullerene derivatives is proven, so, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of fullerenol nanoparticles on brain infarction and edema, especially oxidative damages during reperfusion in an e...

اثر محافظتی زعفران در مقابل آسیب‌های اکسیداتیو در ایسکمی مغزی موضعی- موقتی در موش صحرایی

Background: Numerous studies have shown the protective effects of saffron against oxidative damage in a global model of cerebral ischemia, but its effects on brain edema and oxidative ischemic injury in focal ischemic stroke are not completely understood. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of saffron on brain edema, infarct volume, antioxidant enzyme activity (glutath...

بررسی اثرات درمانی روغن کنجد در کاهش ضایعه و ادم مغزی در مدل آزمایشگاهی سکته مغزی در موش صحرایی

Background and purpose: Sesame oil (SO) is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may produce protective effects against ischemic stroke-induced brain injuries. We examined the effects of treatment with SO on cerebral infarction and edema in a rat model of ischemic stroke. Materials and methods: Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into sham, ischemic, and isch...

بررسی اثر انسداد گذرای شریان مرکزی در کاهش آسیب‌های مغزی در مدل سکته‌ی مغزی رت

Background and Objective: Recent studies suggest that sub-lethal ischemia protect the brain from subsequent ischemic injuries. This study was an effort to identify and shed light on the nature of changes in the blood brain barrier permeability and brain edema. Materials and Methods: Rats were divided into four main experimental groups, each of 21 animals. The first group acted as a model of isc...

Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Brain Edema and Neurological Movement Disorders Following the Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats

Introduction: Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion causes physiological and biochemical changes in the neuronal cells that will eventually lead to cell damage. Evidence indicates that exercise reduces the ischemia and reperfusion-induced brain damages in animal models of stroke. In the present study, the effect of exercise preconditioning on brain edema and neurological movement disorders followin...
